First day of school

Here's my little champ on the first day of Kindergarten!  Isn't he just the cutest thing?

He goes to a charter school, and he was so surprised to see that the other boys had the same color shirt and pants that he did! :)

And here is my older son, who started 2nd grade on Monday...

...very proud of his new LEGO Ninjago shirt. :)

My boys are growing up!  *sniff sniff*

I loved when my kids went to a charter school. Getting dressed was so easy! Of course, they hated that they HAD TO tuck their shirts in. LOL

So your boys go to different schools?

Hi Karen - yes, actually I still homeschool Brandon... he started 2nd grade this week! Ryan was given a [diagnosis?} of high functioning autism spectrum disorder by the school district earlier this year -- not sure how official their declarations are... but it seems accurate to me, all things considered. He has "fooled" everyone (even a pediatric neurologist!) during testing over the last 2 years, while I knew something was different about him... and the reason he fooled them is because he is so cute and charming! He is really social and affectionate. The distinguishing trait, in my opinion, is that he uses "scripts" -- memorized phrases from books, games, and videos -- fairly often (it used to be more than 50% of the time, but as he gets older, it is becoming less). To give an example... last winter at the sledding hill, he walks up to a boy who had just arrived and introduces himself, "Hi, I'm Ryan! Double decker buses are a common form of transportation... blah blah blah..." Kind of cute and funny when he's 5, but perhaps not so much when he's 8 or 10. So the hope is that the special education folks thru the school will be able to give him the extra help he needs with social skills. He also needs some help with coping skills, as he becomes extremely upset when other children cry. (IQ-wise, he's above average... which is so nice to not have to worry about that aspect!) He's a real joy, though!
