Change is in his future...and mine

Ryan, my 2-1/2 year old son, is adventurous. He likes to climb on stuff. And under stuff. He always has. Two weeks ago he figured out how to climb into his crib. Yesterday, he climbed out of it (and landed with a sharp thud on floor, followed by loud crying—he's not terribly agile...built more like a football player ☺).

So now my husband and I have to seriously consider a "big boy bed" for Ryan. However, I confess I am really anxious about this! My biggest concern: it takes this child over an hour to fall asleep at night! He lays in his crib (often with his legs propped up against the crib rail) and jabbers, recites movie lines, and sings at the top of his lungs. It's actually quite funny to observe... but I'm sure you can understand my concern. My schedule has been running like a fairly well-oiled machine around here... at least as far as knowing what to expect (what time everybody wakes up, etc.). And Momma needs her time with God first thing in the morning!

BUT, I have to remember how nervous I was when Brandon first slept in his "big boy bed" when he was just 2 years old... and he did it! He obeyed us and stayed in bed, and he still stays in bed.

So, another great millstone... er, milestone, that is... ahead for la Casa de K! Any advice or perspective is welcome! ☺

millstone!
LOL!!!

Ah, and giving up our sense of control is a scary thing, isn't it??? But just like with every other change, you'll make it through this one, too.
My piece of perspective? Don't fret about your time with God first thing in the morning.
If at all possible - HAVE IT!!!
But if it doesn't happen first thing, don't let that ruin your day. Remember God is with you in EVERY moment. Even the noisy ones.
For a time you may have to become more creative with how you sneak time away with Him, but that's OK.
Are you carrying scripture in your pocket? Cuz when you have 90 seconds alone and quiet, it's great to have that there to pull out and pray about.

Love you!

So funny!
Will takes a long time to get to sleep, too. He loves to read in bed, etc. And...sometimes he gets out of bed.

We decided to "child-proof" his room as best as we could, and then put a gate in the doorway. That way "the whole room" kind of becomes his crib in the morning (though he's not allowed to get out of bed at nighttime when he's supposed to be sleeping). It's worked well for us! And that way in the morning I can hear him stirring and take a couple minutes to myself before getting him (unless he's crying or REALLY wanting me, of course!).

My other solution, if you are desperate for time? This is probably bad parenting 101, but, honestly...Sesame Street. Will gets up to 1 episode a day. Most of it is learning letters, numbers, shapes, etc., not a lot of politically correct, preachy content (that I've seen, at least). And Elmo's world is the 20 min warning that it's almost over. I know, I know...goes against every parenting book out there. But it works for me if I need a good dose of quiet time. And Will is learning his letters & numbers really well! :)

Other than that, I've heard that Susannah Wesley would pull her apron over her head, and the kids knew to leave her alone if she did that, since she was praying. :)

LOL! What a precious picture! My youngest climbed out of his crib at 15 months, but after I secretly watched him do it in the middle of the night...a big boy bed could NOT be scarier than that! Blessings!

I'm not sure I have any good advice because none of my 3 boys ever tried to climb out of their cribs (how we were that lucky, I don't know!) So mine were closer to 4 years old before they moved to a bed. I don't remember specifics, but I think we just firmly told them they couldn't get out of bed without asking (calling to) us.

Good luck! Hopefully it will take just a few days of working through new rules, he'll do well and before long, you'll actually forget about this stage as I kind of have.
